Money-Making Monday -

As a registered member of, you can win "digital dollars" (swagbucks) when you search the internet. Swagbucks come in amounts of $1, $2, $2, $3, and $5 dollars and can be redeemed for prizes, such as gift cards, books, movies, and gaming systems. You'll receive 5 swagbucks when you register. Even better, whenever you win swagbucks, you're entered into a drawing for a Wii! Another way to win swagbucks is to invite others to join. I signed up under Christina at Northern Cheapskate, and now she wins a buck every time I win! (Edit: Kimberly at My Good Cents did not win her Wii from Swagbucks, but she has been able to get some great prizes, like a Nitendo DS!)

Search results are from Google and Every time I've searched, I've received "real" results that are exactly what I need. You won't win bucks every time you search, though. Swagbucks is somehow set up so that only people who are searching "naturally" will win. This keeps people from racking up points by searching for hours at a time. One member found that searching about five times in the morning and five times at night will get you the best results.
I joined last week, and I am already up to 20 swagbucks. I haven't paid attention to when I win, but I do win at least a buck each day. I'm currently working for a $5 Amazon gift card, which cost 45 swagbucks.

Ready to try it out?! Click on the banner below to sign up! Let me know if you sign up so I can thank you!

Last Day of the BFF Sale at Old Navy!

Old Navy has marked some clearance items down even more! Most of the clearance prices online are NOT found in the stores. Everything I bought online Friday night was still full price in the store yesterday!

Read my first post about the sale for all the info!

In-store, I did find two pairs of pants for me for less than $7 each. I was very excited about that!

Sales Starting 9/21

A Full Cup is my favorite source for finding information about upcoming sales. The following links to AFC will give you the list of items on sale and coupons to use:

Depending on your area's Target ad, you may get a $5 GC for buying 4 boxes of Cheerio's. I've seen or heard of three different versions of the ad, and I'm hoping htat I'll get the $5 GC at mine. I still have my coupon for the free box of Cheerios from the Cheerio Challenge! See a scenerio to get Cheerios for .50 a piece here.

See coupon and ad match-ups at Attention Target Shoppers.

I'm working my shopping list so I can put it up first thing in the morning!

$5/$25 at BRU - 9/19 - 9/21

I love when BRU puts out these coupons because everyone I know either has a baby (or two!) on the way or just had a baby.

Old Navy - 20% off In-store & Online And FREE Ship!

Thanks to Angie at BC, I found out about Old Navy's BFF Sale. To get the discount in store, tell the cashier that you would like the BFF discount. Online, use the promo code "BFF" to get 20% off and FREE shipping! (I LOVE free shipping!)

Look in the clearance section for items $4.99 and under (kids & baby) and $9.99 and under (adults).

What could your savings looks like? I just bought the following:

2 men's polo shirts ($10.00 each)
2 baby girl pjs - short sleeve/long pants ($4.99 each)
1 baby girl dress ($4.99)

Money-Making Monday: MyPoints

Until a few months ago, I never realized how easy it would be to make extra money through the Internet. Being a really cautious (aka paranoid) person, making money via the Internet seemed to scream "scam!" Once I started reading others' blogs, I realized that I might be wrong. So, after much research, I have joined several money-making sites. Every Monday, I'm going to highlight one of the sites I use so that you can see why it is on my "not a scam!" list.

MyPoints is probably my favorite because it's so simple. I can earn points by reading emails, buying items online at my favorite stores, taking surveys, and using coupons.

Emails: Reading emails usually earns you 5 points, but you can sometimes earn more points by signing up for the newsletter/website/product that the email is advertising.

Shopping: Each affliated store offers different points. At Barnes and Noble, you earn 10 points for each dollar you spend, while you only earn 2 points for each dollar you spend at ebay. To receive the points you have to log in your MyPoints account and go to the site through MyPoints.

Joining Clubs: By joining clubs like NetFlix, QPB, and Columbia House, you can earn a large amount of points. I earned 1,000 by joinning QPB.

Surveys: Occassionally, you'll be asked to participate in a survey that will earn you 10-50 points.
Credit Card: Apply for and use the MyPoints credit card and earn points for the purchases you put on your card.

Coupons: Print coupons from from your MyPoints account. You'll get points each month for redeeming them.

You can use your points to purchase gift cards to stores, such as CVS, Target, Au Bon Pain, and many, many more. The amount of points needed to "buy" a gift card varies, but most $25 cards need between 3,000-4,000 points. Some stores offer $10 gift cards that cost somewhere in the 1,000 pt range.

My Experience

I have been a member of MyPoints for 3 months, and I already have 4,000 points in my account. I earned most of them from reading emails and making purchases that would have made without being a member. I have more points that I'm waiting to be reported to mypoints. I'm going to "cash out" the points for gift cards closer to Christmas. I'll either give the gift cards as gifts or use them to buy gifts.

Joining is easy! Just email me (my email is at the top of the sidebar), and I'll send you a referral. Did I mention that you can earn 250 points by referring people? This month, you can earn double points (that's 500 points) for refferals.

Free Books

I have always loved to read, so I guess there's no surprise that I grew up to become an English teacher. The problem with loving to read is that you either put out tons of money on books, some of which you end up wishing you hadn't bought, or you exhaust your free book supply. I have recently started a quest to find places to get free books, and I'm sharing my finds with you!

The Library - Of course, the library is a great place to find all types of books. My local library is connected to a system of 20 libraries in 3 counties, allowing me access to all the books in those libraries. I frequently request books to be sent to my library for pick up.

"Swap" Shops - We have a local shop that allows you to swap your paperbacks for new-to-you paperbacks. I haven't visited this shop yet, but I have friends who love it. There are a few rules regarding the condition of the books you bring in, so be sure to ask your local shop before you load up your books. To find one in your area, go to the Yellow Pages and search for "used books.

Swap Parties - Do you have several friends with whom you share books? Why not make a party out of it? You and your friends can set the rules - for example, each person brings 5 hardback fiction books - and the supplies needed (margaritas? coffee?). Maybe each party can have a theme - mystery, historical, etc.

Swap Parties, Part 2 - Why keep the party just for adults? If your kids are like mine, they have tons of books that they never read anymore. Have a kid-themed party and let the kids bring books to swap!

BookMooch and PaperBackSwap - Similar to a swap shop, but you do have to pay for shipping the books. (Thanks to Jenn for telling me about PaperBackSwap!)

Harlequin - Free book offers from Harlequin, Silhouette and other series

Daily Lit - Receive installments of books via email or RSS feed. Some books are free, and others range from $3.95 to $6.95. You can also receive short stories.

Project Gutenberg - This is the largest collection of free eBooks.

First Look - Each month, Harper Collins offers advanced reader copies of select books. Choose the book(s) you'd like to read and you'll be entered into drawings for the opportunity to read and review the book(s). Register and they will email you when books that match your interests are available

Read it Forward - Request advance copies of select books. In the current issue, the first 200 to request a book will receive it. After you read it, pass it on to another book lover.

Read it First - St. Martin will send you the first few chapters of a new release so that you can decide if you'd like to buy it. You may also get the opportunity to win free books.

Browse Inside - At Harper Collins, you can read excerpts and even entire books online. Here's the list of over 15000 books available. - Join a book club, and each week, you'll receive 2-3 chapters of a different book. The chapters are divided into 5-minute portions that are sent each day. Reading samples might also qualify you for a drawing for books or other items.

Giveaways - How could I have left this off the list? I recently won two books from Penguin on Freebies4mom! Here's a link to the book giveaway list on Prizey.

Promotions - Companies sometimes have promotions in which you can get a free book by sending in UPCs or tokens from their products. Kellogg's is currently running such a promotion.

Not Free, but Great Deals:

Amazon - I buy most of my books from Amazon because the prices are always the cheapest, especially on new releases.

Quality Paperback Books - We were members of this club years ago, and I just rejoined through MyPoints. I have discovered some really great books through the club, and they really are great quality. When I rejoined, I received 8 books for about $35. You earn points by buying books, and you can redeem the points for cheaper book prices.

Do you know of any other places to find free or cheap books?

New Coupons on!

Check out the new coupons on the widget, including ones from Kotex, Pilsbury, and Betty Crocker. I love the $1/1 Kotex pads, $1/1 Kotex overnights, and .75/1 Kotex liners because you can usually find freebies or moneymakers for Kotex at CVS, Walgreens, or Rite Aid. I've heard that you can sometimes find small packages of Kotex at Walmart for $1.
